The following actually comes from that silly Anita Blake book I'm reading. I like it because it sums up how I feel about my ex, and is an answer to those people who throw 'you don't love him or you wouldn't have left him' bullshit at me.
"There comes a point where you just love someone. Not because they're good, or bad, or anything really. You just love them. It doesn't mean you'll be together forever. It doesn't mean you won't hurt each other. It just means you love them. Sometimes in spite of who they are, and sometimes because of who they are. And you know that they love you, sometimes because of who you are, and sometimes in spite of it."
She has sex with a vampire and a were-leopard shortly after this, but you get my point.

Trust me when I say that the sex scenes get really boring, really fast....sorry about that! And you have to wade through all of the deep, heartfelt thoughts and conversations about relationships, right and wrongs, and this writer obviously no longer has an editor.

Anything gets boring if there's too much of it, or if the author has to interrupt the story with a veritable treatise of each and every action and emotion even as they unfold. The real question is, is there an editor with enough gumption to red pencil the stuff which turns a good novel into a massively boring experience.
I confess to skipping the sex scenes (and lint inspections) after the first three pages to get on with the story. (Btw, why don't any of Vicki's enemies ever attack her when she's in deep heat and has her mind and other attributes fixed on the intense passion of the moment? I doubt she would be able to defend herself on the spot and some major, if not fatal, damage might well be wrought.)
And anyway how does she find the time to hunt down and dispatch various nasties if she's either fucking around, or mooning about the two beings she'd like to fuck around with? One thing at a time woman! You'll live longer.
I agree that the sentiment Hamilton expresses is pretty profound. She might have also recalled that if a person really loves you he (or she) will stay with you no matter what. No matter whether you're in a bitchy mood or not. No matter if you span the emotional scales or not. Ask Susan, my wife of thirty years. She could certainly tell a thing or two about patient endurance. It's something precious to have and to hold. And I hope you are blessed enough to eventually find it. Of course Victoria is not ready to admit her commitment to her power yet, much less to a relationship. In time maybe?
Or maybe not. After all she's too busy saving her own ass (not to mention those of the beings she loves) to give settling down much thought. She might even be truly boring if ever she did.
So I'll take Victoria Black as Hamilton chooses to serve her up. After all, skipping a sex scene or two is a small price to pay for the thrills the books can deliver.

She sure has found a way to shorten the actual plots of her books while lengthening the page count! I'm gonna go back and read the first three and remember why I loved the Anita Blake character before Hamilton got sex-obsessed...
